High above Strathfarrar

Spent the weekend up at Cannich (close to the Great Glen) from where there is easy access to Glen Affric, Mullardoch and Strathfarrar. Won’t say there is easy access to the hills though as many of them are quite remote around here and require big days.

Did two of the more accessible munros from Strathfarrar ; Sgurr na Ruaidhe and Carn nan Gobhar. These two munros (along with a further two plus two munro tops) are accessible from the private road down Strathfarrar. Access to this road is available for vehicle on a controlled basis which avoids the otherwise long walk in.

Ascent of the hills was reasonably easy via a rather boggy path. However we descended via the corrie to its south which was very heathery and rough underfoot which made for quite a bit of hard walking at the end of the day. Walking from one hill to the next was a delight on springy soft mossy grass although the summit of Carn nan Gobhar is a bit stoney.

We were somewhat slow on the descent and it was a bit hit and miss as to whether we would make it back to the gate at the end of the road by 7pm which was the time that we were meant to be out of the glen by. Think it was about 6.50pm when we drew up at the gate !

Stayed at the Cannich campsite which is a lovely place to camp as it is very natural and you can get your tent in among the trees. Could get a bit midgy in Summer though !
