Ben Gullipen is a small (414m) hill to the south of Callander which has a reputation of being the best viewpoint in the Trossachs. On a clear day you will be able to spot 7 different lochs from the summit.
- Distance: 11 km / 7 miles (out and back)
- Ascent: 300 m / 1000 feet
- Terrain: Paths and landrover track
- Start / finish: Grid ref NN 626 074 on the A81 road at the south side of Callander.
The route starts at a gap in the wall on the A81 road just to the south of Callander. Don’t be alarmed by the signpost at the start of the walk which seems to imply that it is further to the summit than it actually is!
Follow the path through the gap in the wall into the woods and start going up hill. Continue straight on at the first path junction passing gardens to your left as you start to go up hill. Soon you will be walking through connifer forest with a spruce needle carpet under your feet.
Go left at the next two forest track junctions. Approximately 200m after the second junction turn right onto a track where a signpost points the way. At the next junction go left and then when you reach yet another junction, this time go right staying on the obvious track rather than the more grassy track. This next section of forest track will bring you to a T junction with a landrover track marked by snow posts. Turn right on to this landrover track which is the access track to the communications masts on the hill.
Follow the track up the hill passing through a gate at the edge of the forest. Note the sign about highland cattle on the hill and keeping dogs under control. Follow the track across the open hillside as it gradually winds its way up to the summit masts. Once at the masts walk round the left hand side of them to rather muddy ground where a stile leads to the summit proper.
If you wish, you could continue on to 427m Beinn Dearg but the ground is rougher now with just a rough path to follow.
Return the same way you came up. However, if you have two cars available, you could leave one of them at the start of the landrover track on the A81 at NN 616 047 and return to that point.
