Chapel Den and Coalpit Den

This short walk near Kettlebridge in the Howe of Fife takes you around farmland and woods. Much of the route has open views across fields but wooded areas are also included which provide a contrast.

Distance: 4.1 miles / 6.7 km

Ascent: 300 feet / 90 m

Start/finish: near Kettlebridge

Forestry operations are taking place in early 2017 near the start of this walk. If there are active works it would probably be best to make a diversion along the road south of the forest.

There is parking for 2 or 3 cars at the end of the forest track at grid reference No 325 054 on the unclassified road. If there is no space here, there are a further couple of spaces further down the road.

Go left (south) from the parking area to reach an obvious path on your right hand side leading into a felled area of forest. This path soon becomes a forest track through the eastern felled section of the forest. After about 900m the track curves left to join the road. Before reaching the road turn right onto an obvious path through the trees. After a further 700m you will reach a gate onto a public road.

Turn right on to the road going slightly downhill to reach the end of the road at the Rameldry Mill. Turn left here on to a rough track passing the log cabins at the Steadings. Continue on this track straight on with a purple arrow marker as a guide. When you reach a second purple arrow pointing straight on, turn right through a field gate onto a track which follows the field edge. A black sign for the Steadings is also a useful marker here. Please ensure that you keep dogs on the track and don’t allow them to roam across crops whilst walking round the field.

After the field the track goes downhill into the wooded area of Chapel Den and you will see the large Chapel House to your left. There may be some mud in this area but it soon dries out as you come back uphill towards Chapel Farm. Follow the track, turning right at a T junction, to keep to the left of the farm. Continue straight on as the track curves right to reach a cottage at Muirend. Shortly after this cottage you will reach a locked gate. Either climb the gate at the hinged end or squeeze through the fence (watch out for barb wire) to reach a cross road junction.

Go right at this crossroad onto a path. After 150m you reach the end of the path where you turn right again, now following a purple arrow. Pass through the wooded area of Coalpit Den where the path becomes a track and then an access road. 1km after the houses at Coalpit Den you will reach more houses where the road turns sharp right. Leave the road and go left on to an unsurfaced track along a field edge.

This final section of the walk can be rather muddy as the track is used by farm machinery. However, it is easy enough to follow. After about 1km you will reach the public road near to the parking area. Turn right and follow the road back to the walk start.
