Glenfeshie Lochans and Creag Dhubh
This is a pleasant forest walk to the trig point on Creag Dhubh, starting and finishing at the lovely Uath Lochans in Glenfeshie. The walk is entirely on paths and tracks with landrover tracks being used on the ascent and unsurfaced paths for the descent.
- Distance: 9 km / 6 miles
- Ascent:250 m / 820 feet
- Terrain: Mostly paths and tracks
- Start / finish: Uath Lochans car park, Glenfeshie grid ref NH 835 022
From the forestry car park commence the walk by following the red and white arrow markers anti-clockwise around the lochans.
After the first lochan, the white trail has a marker post pointing left, ignore this and continue on the main path to reach a second junction where the white trail goes left and the red trail goes right up the hill. Take the left option following the white route for 500m to reach a forest track.
Turn right on to the track (the white trail goes left at this point) and follow it slightly uphill through the forest. This section of the forest is a mix of forestry and open (felled) areas. Keep on the main track going straight on at junctions. After about 1.75 km you reach a large open area where the trees have been felled. You will now start to see the wooded summit of Creag Dhubh ahead of you. Keep on the track, with its increasing gradient, which will take you around the west side of the summit to approach from the south away from the crags. The summit is topped with an OS triangulation pillar but sadly due to the forestry there are no views.
Descend on an unsurfaced path (MTB trail) in a north easterly direction. At a Y junction in the path keep to the left, soon reaching a felled area and views across to the Glenfeshie hills. The path continues, still in a north easterly direction, across the open ground to reach the forest on the opposite side. The path then re-enters the forest and turns in a more notherly direction as it descends the hillside. This section is particularly pleasant walking on mossy ground through tall pines. After about 800m the path reaches a wider unsurfaced path where you turn right.
Stay on this main path keeping right at the first junction to reach a forest road after about 200m. Turn left on to the obvious road/track for 150m to reach an open area on your right. Go right onto an unsurfaced path in a north east direction. The path becomes more of a track as it progresses through firebreaks until it meets a surfaced track after about 1.1 km. Go left on to the track for about 400m until you reach a marker for the white Lochans trail. Go right through a “gateway” between two boulders following the marker posts, anti-clockwise around the larger of the lochans. The ground here is marshy and boardwalks have been laid to assist. The easiest way back to the car park is to simply follow the white marker posts around the Lochans trails, keeping right at a couple of junctions. Alternative paths are available if you have time to explore the area.
