Leum Uilleum Circuit

A fantastic hill for views, that was featured in the 1996 Trainspotting film. A trip to this remote area is always special.

Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
Ascent: 560 m / 1850 feet
Terrain: hill paths and quad bike tracks that can be boggy at lower levels.
Start / finish: Corrour Station on the West Highland line (no public road access)

Route Map

Start from Corrour station by following the gravel path alongside the railway line signed for Kinlochleven, Fort William and Spean Bridge. After crossing a wooden bridge, keep to the left hand fork heading towards the shoulder of the hill. The right hand fork is the route to Lochaber.

The gravel path ends and is superseded by a more typical rough quad bike track which provides an easy ascent up the long north east shoulder of the hill with amazing views over the Lochaber hills, Loch Treig and back to Loch Ossian. At approximately 800m the path splits. The left hand option is a more direct route to the summit but it is worth taking the right hand option and including the summit of Beinn a’ Bhric. The 876m summit is located slightly off the path. From this point on a clear day you can now enjoy views across Rannoch Moor to Glencoe.

From the summit descend east down grassy slopes to the coll between Beinn a’ Bhric and Leum Uilleum. Continue upwards, off path, towards the summit of Leum Uilleum, to rejoin the track. Don’t stay on the track though, as you need to continue eastwards off path to gain the 909m summit.

From the summit an easy to follow trodden path heads north east. The path snakes its way steeply downhill with views across Corrour and Loch Ossian ahead of you. Lower down the ground becomes somewhat wetter and the path is easy to lose. However, there is a path / quad bike track of sorts all the way across the boggy moorland back to the station with its restaurant.
