The Cat and the Goat

Cat Law with Long Goat, an easy hill walk using paths and estate roads over two Glen Prosen hills.

Distance: 11.1 km / 7 miles
Ascent: 480 m / 1500 feet
Terrain: mostly paths and estate roads, small amount of off path on tussocky grass.
Start/finish: Glen Prosen, grid ref NO 35493 61876 (red gate). Parking is available at the side of the road about 600m south of this point.

Route Map

Head up the track from the red gate until you reach a second red gate. At this point the track becomes a trodden path and splits into two. Take the right hand fork heading up hill and picking up a fence line to your right. Simply follow the path for 1.4 km to reach the summit of Long Goat. The summit isn’t marked in anyway but there are good views across to Glen Doll.

Continue alongside the fence on a path with the bulk of Cat Law ahead of you. The path becomes a bit wetter as you progress. A small stile needs to be crossed to reach the summit at 671m along with the slightly lower trig point at 669m. There is also stone shelter cairn slightly east of the trig point on the other side of the fence.

Descend roughly south over grass and heather to join an obvious track. This track descends the south east shoulder of the hill passing a couple of cairns at the 560m summit of The Crandard. The stony track continues downhill to reach a small plantation close to a small reservoir.

400m after the trees, having crossed a burn, take the left hand fork at a track junction. After 100m keep right at a small lochan with an attractive stone placed at the side of the road. This track will now take you around the side of Long Goat and back to the public road. Keep straight on at any junctions. Note that the current OS Landranger map does not accurately show this track. Once you reach the road at Pearsie Muir, turn left and it is a short 5 min walk back to the parking area.
