Craighall Den

This is a popular walking spot on the outskirts of Ceres. Although Craighall Den itself is a very short walk, it can lengthened slightly by starting from Ceres. The walk takes you across farmland to the lovely wooded den and the remains of a limekiln.

  • Distance: 3.5 km / 2.2 miles
  • Ascent: 60 m / 200 feet
  • Terrain: Unsurfaced paths
  • Start / finish: Ceres (Anstruther Road). Bus service, parking, toilets available in the centre of Ceres nearby. Alternatively start from the small parking area at Craighall Den.

route map Craighall Den

Start from Anstruther Road on the edge of Ceres where a small wooden sign for Craighall Den points up a farm track. Almost immediately leave the track on an unsurfaced (and possibly muddy) path on the left. This path heads slightly uphill following field edges until it reaches a cottage. Keep the cottage to your left and follow the surfaced track to the next farm (Craighall Steading). Again keeping all the buildings to your left, follow the track and then an unsurfaced path around the west and then south side of the buildings. From here an unsurfaced path leads down into the wooded Craighall Den.

Once in the den, it is worth initially turning left to walk up to the old limekiln and quarry (with cave). After exploring this area, walk back down the path in a westerly direction. There is a choice of the maintained path or informal paths closer to the river. The walk through the den is less than 1 mile but is very pleasant through woodland alongside the river. On reaching the exit from the woods, there is a small parking area where a core path arrow points right up a few steps. Head up these steps, turning left at the top and then almost immediately right on to an unsurfaced path.

A path of around half a mile now takes you back to Ceres, again across farmland. The path returns to Anstruther Road in Ceres close to the start point.

Fleecefaulds Meadow

The Craighall Den walk is rather short but if you have your own transport you could combine it with another short walk at the nearby Fleecefaulds Meadow Nature Reserve south of Ceres.
