Fife is not exactly hill country. However, it does have a number of fine smaller hills which make excellent viewpoints of the surrounding low lying countryside.

The high ground in Fife tends to be concentrated in the Lomond Hills, Benarty Hill and Cleish Hills areas. All of these areas provide some easily accessible fine moorland walking. The Lomond Hills and Benarty Hill are more “developed” than the Cleish Hills and consequently are more popular with visitors. However, the Cleish Hills themselves and their outliers in the Saline area are well worth spending time exploring.

Assuming a minimum all round drop (prominence) of 30m then only nine of Fife’s hill are higher than 300m with a further 6 listed as being between 250m and 300m. Perhaps of more interest given the flatness of the Fife countryside is a hill’s prominence i.e. the minimum drop between it and neighbouring hills. In this respect Fife boasts seven Marilyns (hills with 150m or more prominence), seven further Humps (hills with 100m and over prominence, and a further 98 Tumps (hills with 30m and over prominence).

A comprehensive listing of Fife hills with the addition of trig pillars / points and hillforts is available to download in Excel format. This excel file goes a step beyond the Tumps with the hill list as it now also includes the Fife Sub-Tumps and TumpBeags.

Whilst many of the hills make for good walks for casual walkers, some of the lesser known ones are likely to appeal primarily to the hill bagger / enthusiast as access may not be straightforward. Ensure you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code as some of these summits are located in working countryside and a few are even in the middle of crop fields. If access isn’t possible wait until a more suitable time of the year.

The menu to the left (or below depending upon your device) can be used to access information on individual Fife Hills.
