A selection of lesser known (visited) hills within the Lomond Hills area that feature in recognised hill lists.
Map will be added soon.
Drumain Hill (343m)
The 343m Dumian Hill is one of Fife’s Tump Beags (hills with between 15 and 19m prominence). It lies on the eastern slopes of the main Bishop Hill massif and is reasonably easy to reach although it may require a detour depending upon your route. Use the obvious (and signposted) path from East Feal into Harperleas Woods (or approach from Haperleas Reservoir to the north on the forest paths). From the firebreak at NO 205 043 go west through a new deer gate into a recently planted forest area. Probably the easiest was to Drumain Hill is to follow the grassy track / path clockwise around the perimeter fence to the western side of the plantation. From here head directly up the grass slope to reach the highest point. Although this area has been surrounded with the inevitable deer fencing it is encouraging to see a good number of gates have been provided at useful points.
Maiden Castle (313m) and Green Hill (313m)
Maiden Castle (a Tump Beag) and Green Hill (a Sub Tump) are easily reached from Craigmead car park and can be incorporated into an ascent of West Lomond.
Leave the car park through the trees following the blue arrow (path to Falkland), passing through some gates to reach a track. Turn left on the track for 200m before picking up a rough moorland path on your right at the edge of the trees. Follow this path north west towards forestry and then alongside the edge of the forest (don’t go through the gate into the forest). Keep north west to reach the obvious grassy hummock of the Maiden Castle fort. Green Hill lies approximately 300m north-east of Maiden Castle across moorland and can be reached by means of a rough grassy path.
Balgothrie Hill (273m)
This Sub Tump (hill with between 20 and 29m prominence) is an easy diversion if walking past Balgothrie at the south-eastern end of Ballo Reservoir. The obvious route up the hill is a grass track up the the west side of the grassy hill. However, on reaching the summit area the actual summit is the other side of a barb wire fence which needs to be crossed. To avoid the fence, it is better to approach from the field north of the hill. Please note that the hill is used for sheep grazing so best not to take a dog.
Knockmorehill (266m)
This Sub Tump (hill with between 20 and 29m prominence) lies to the south of the Lomond Hills area and is easiest reached either directly from Holl Reservoir car park or included as a diversion when walking the track to West Feal.
From the car park head south past West Balgothrie and the track to West Feal. 200m south of the house is a gate on your right hand side providing access to a track through woodland. Follow this track which will turn left uphill through woodland. Keep going up on what is now more of a path than a track. On reaching the high point, turn left off path into the woodland. The deer fence can be climbed using and interesting old wooden gate and stile arrangement, although if you have long legs may find it easier to just climb the fence directly. From the gate go directly uphill through a gap between aspruce and rhododendron. There is a fallen tree which needs to be walked around to reach summit area. The summit is not particularly obvious but is possibly a tuft of grass next to a small rowan. This area is quite overgrown including bracken and may be best avoided in Summer / Autumn.
From the summit return to the path. If heading for Bishop Hill or West Feal then continue on the path (don’t return back towards West Balgothrie) through spruce and then newly planted native trees. Keep right at a junction. Follow the path, which is now mostly a grass trod, round to the right to reach an open grass area. Cross the wall to your left and pickup a a feint track running east to west beside the trees. Follow this track alongside the trees and round to the right turning north. The track may be a bit hard to find in places but just keep the trees to your right. Follow the path down past the trees to reach a sheep field on your right. Cross the field to join the track heading to West Feal
